2014 Palmer Chardonnay
Ron Palmer planted Wente clone Chardonnay in 1983 with budwood sourced from Buena Vista. The fruit is as good now as it was then. So good in fact, that when Andre Tschelistcheff purchased the grapes back in the late 80's he declared them his best Chardonnay. We are proud to release the fourth vintage of this Single Vineyard Chardonnay with grapes from Ron's historic and pedigreed site.
Fermentation was conducted in a range of vessels, mostly neutral oak with just a touch of new, steam bent, French Oak to support but not overwhelm the fruit. A concrete Egg was utilized on a small portion to impart creaminess. Malo-Lactic was inhibited to preserve the bright acidity which is this wine’s hallmark.
There is purity to this wine that asserts itself as the first delicate notes rise from the glass. Citrus elements dominate with an underpinning of stone fruit indicate the precision and focus that drive this wine. A hint of reduction is conveyed by the note of struck match. The palate offers lemon pith and river stone with a mouthwatering acidity that offers freshness without austerity. Modest ripeness eliminates any heat on the finish from excess alcohol. Respectful treatment in the cellar allows the varietal character of old vine Chardonnay to enjoy the spotlight. Available at the winery; 209 cases produced (the rest of the grapes can be found in our 2014 Le Rêve, Blanc de Blancs).
