The 2014 edition of our Limited Barrel Selection is made up of the nine best barrels in the cellar, which yielded just 224 cases of this very special wine.
Stylistically, this wine continues what has been established in our classic Carneros blend, The Famous Gate. It is a careful assembly of several key types of Pinot Noir; Dijon 777, Dijon 667, and the Hanzell selection. Perfect ripeness, integration and balance come together with French oak barrel aging to produce a wine with magnificent presence and gravitas - along with grace and suppleness which are hallmarks of Domaine Carneros Pinot Noir.
In this extraordinary wine, the signature characteristics one expects are lushly presented. The nose opens slowly at its own leisurely pace with an array of savory scents including roasted coffee, saddle leather, and black cherry compote. The fruit profile presents strawberry, grilled figs, and black cherry along with a note of tobacco leaf. Very fine, polished tannins define the palate with a touch of sweetness.
In 2014 we saw a welcome course correction from our cycle of vintages affected by drought. We enjoyed a deluge of rain in February that enabled us to start the growing season with saturated soils and a full water table. The summer was typical as we entered a daily cycle of marine fog that would usually burn off by midday. Fortunately, we did not have any of the typical heat spikes that we often see in July. The crop was slightly lighter than average and we kicked off the harvest on August 8th.
This pure expression of our Carneros estate beckons enjoyment now or can be cellared for an additional eight-plus years to further its complexity.
2,688 sequentially numbered bottles are available only through the winery.
