2012 Clonal Series Swan Pinot Noir Magnum (1.5L)
Aromatically the Swan clone produces some of the most intriguing Pinot noir in our portfolio, offering a mix of both savory spice notes along with fruit character. This nose opens with a core of dark sweet blackberry, with flashes of red currant, occasionally drifting to blueberry. Somewhat brooding, and woodsy, there is depth to the perfume that includes floral notes, leather, and not quite black pepper. On the palate there is plush fine-grained tannic underpinned with a certain grip which is mitigated by sweet juicy fruit character leading to a lengthy finish.
Hand harvested fruit was carefully de-stemmed and dropped into a waiting open top tank to which we added a touch of whole-cluster (10%) to drive the spice component. At pressing, the free run was separated and sent to barrel, filling just eight small French barriques. A selection of only 3-year aged stave wood toasted at a modest/medium level allowed full expression of the fruit. 15 months of barrel age allowed plenty of time for a seamless and thorough integration of all flavor components.
