2011 Clonal Series Pommard Pinot Noir Magnum (1.5 Liter)
Both the fruit flavors and mature tannin testify that complete ripeness has been achieved. The nose is initially red fruit oriented with cranberry, and crushed raspberry. However, with a little bit of time in the glass an exposure to the air this seemingly shy wine begins to open up. There is a spicy side with a touch of boysenberry, anise, and new saddle leather.
The 2011 growing season offered an ideal match for this early ripening clone. The cool season allowed a pick date of September 21st. This single block wine was handled in a very straightforward manner, with a traditional Burgundian-style open top fermentation that allowed the delicate nature of the Pommard fruit its full and unadorned expression.
Élevage commenced with the combination of both free-run and lightly pressed new wine. Of the 21 barrels selected for the final blend, 8 were new. The individual barrels were selected for flavor restraint to complement the texture of this unique Pinot Noir without overshadowing it with too much barrel influence.
